Communities United: Raising the Stakes 2025 — An Honor to Stand Together

Event

Some moments remind you why this work matters. Some gatherings restore your energy.

Some invitations feel like an affirmation that you are exactly where you’re meant to be. Communities United: Raising the Stakes 2025 was all of that, and more.

The LaShauna Matthews Center was deeply honored to be invited by Michelle Maese, President of SEIU 1107, to serve as a Community Partner for this powerful and inspiring gathering. Being included among organizations and leaders committed to justice, equity, and community-centered change was both meaningful and affirming.

A Day Filled With Community, Purpose and Joy

From the moment the event began, the energy was undeniable. Communities United brought together advocates, workers, organizers, and community members who believe in the power of collective action and shared responsibility.

Beyond the important conversations and connections, the event was also filled with incredible performances that reminded us why culture, art, and expression are essential to community healing and movement-building. The performances were vibrant, moving, and deeply rooted in the lived experiences of the people attending the event. They brought moments of reflection, celebration, and joy. Creating space not just for dialogue, but for connection.

These performances weren’t just entertainment; they were a powerful expression of resilience, creativity, and shared humanity. They reminded us that movements are sustained not only by policy and advocacy, but by art, storytelling, and the joy we share with one another.

Why This Moment Meant So Much to Us

Our work at the LaShauna Matthews Center exists at the intersection of healthcare, justice, and lived experience. Being welcomed into a space that centers community voices and honors culture alongside advocacy reaffirmed why we do this work.

This invitation was more than a seat at the table, it was a recognition that confronting discrimination in healthcare is deeply connected to broader struggles for dignity and equity. It was a reminder that real change happens when organizations, labor leaders, artists, and communities come together with intention.

We are especially grateful to Michelle Maese and SEIU 1107 for their leadership, partnership, and commitment to building spaces where advocacy and community can thrive side by side.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

We left Communities United energized, encouraged, and inspired. The conversations, the performances, and the shared sense of purpose made this gathering truly special.

To everyone who stopped by our table, shared their story, asked thoughtful questions, or simply offered support. Thank you. Your presence made a difference.

We look forward to continuing this work alongside partners who understand that justice is not just something we fight for, it’s something we build together.
